Their music is something you physically feel, and their live sets are called not performances but rituals — with infrasound, improvisation, and catharsis on the edge of ecstasy. We talked with them about how their sound took shape, why distance between scenes matters, and what Orphx means to them today, stripped of all labels.

Your early releases were pretty harsh, almost pure industrial and noise. Later a more defined rhythm and club element came in. Was that a conscious shift, or did it just happen naturally?

Rich: It was a natural development. From the beginning of the project, near the end of 1993, we were both into a wide variety of music and this included industrial and experimental music as well as more adventurous forms of dance music. Christie and I were going to raves around Southern Ontario at this time and discovering the kinds of darker, psychedelic techno that we liked. The industrial music that we were most inspired by also had a very strong rhythmic element: SPK, Neubauten, Clock DVA, Skinny Puppy, The Klinik. So we quickly began incorporating more and more rhythmic elements into the project. Around 1997 I started bringing in more techno and electro elements and that led to the Nullity EP.

Christie: Yeah it definitely happened naturally. We have both always been inspired by a wide range of genres. I think it was also due in part to changes in the types of gear we were using. We began with limited gear and gradually incorporated more sophisticated machines, sequencing, and syncing methods that allowed us to explore more complex rhythmic ideas that we couldn’t at the very beginning.

People often don’t just listen to your music, they physically feel it. Is that something you think about when making a track, or not really?

Christie: Definitely. I love that interpretation. I think the texture of the sounds, the frequency range, and the way they move in the listening space are all really important for creating the atmosphere and experience that we are after with a particular track.

Rich: We are often making music with these factors in mind, trying to create sounds and compositions with a full frequency range and paying special attention to the physical effects. This is especially important to us when playing live. Lately we have been doing a lot of work with infrasound (sounds below 20Hz) and this has been an inspiring experience.

When you started moving toward a more techno-oriented sound, did it feel like stepping into a different scene? Or more like a natural continuation for you?

Rich: When we were starting in the 90s, there was a strong divide between the industrial scene and techno. For many years, we found it difficult to get any interest from techno promoters or fans because our music was out of step with the minimal techno trend of the time. And some industrial fans were dismissive of anything that connected to dance music. We were fortunate to connect with the rhythmic noise scene in Europe: other artists who were explicitly combining industrial music with dance music but in a different way than the “future pop” and “industrial rock” trends in North American industrial music at that time — most of which we hated. With rhythmic noise the influence was more from 90s techno, IDM, electro, and drum and bass, as well as European power electronics. During the early 2000s, we made more of an effort to connect with techno artists by commissioning remixes of our work from Surgeon, Sleeparchive and Fluxion. Shortly after that we connected with Adam X, who was also exploring combining industrial with techno. Our releases on Sonic Groove began just as a new wave of interest in harsher, darker music within techno was starting to grow. This really opened up the doors for us, allowing us to connect with more techno fans, promoters and venues.

Christie: It didn’t feel like we were making a big shift in our sound — that was really just a continuation of what we were doing. But we did really notice a shift in the audience as we started to connect with more people. And fortunately many of our older fans have stuck with us and we are really grateful for that. It has been great to be able to play in a wide variety of music scenes, as each one inspires a different approach: different energy, and often different sounds and structure.

A lot of your tracks carry this sense of pressure or control. Is that more about the outside world, or something personal?

Rich: Both, I think. I certainly see music as an outlet for difficult feelings and emotions and I think that comes across in a lot of the music, particularly our live performances. And of course we are influenced by the world around us. Many of our titles, samples and lyrics refer to both that personal level, referencing psychological and spiritual themes and concepts, as well as larger social or political themes.

When you play your tracks in clubs, do you pay attention to how people react, or are you not really focused on the dancefloor?

Rich: Improvisation is a big part of our performances so it’s important to listen closely to what each person is doing and the overall mix. And while I try to stay focused on this, it’s impossible for me to ignore the reactions of the crowd and I often find myself responding to that energy.

Christie: Yeah, I think there is definitely a strong relationship between how we perform and our relationship with the audience. Certain audiences will inspire a different level of intensity or quality and texture of sounds — some more noisy and cathartic, some more deep and hypnotic.

Do you have a clear moment where a track feels finished to you? Or does it always feel like it could be pushed further?

Christie: I have a really hard time finishing tracks. Usually a deadline decides those things for me! Rich is much better at determining the finished state of a track.

Rich: After many years of working on music I think I have a good sense of when something feels finished to me. But I think this is a real challenge for every creative person and when I listen to something much later I will often think of ways that it could be improved. I think you have to trust your intuition and judgement to finish each track to the best of your ability. Get the idea down and move on! But yeah, I will often return to a composition later and see ways in which it could be developed or pushed further and this often leads to new experiments and new compositions.

Your live sets are often described as something more than just a DJ or live performance, almost like a ritual. Do you see it that way yourself, or is that more how people interpret it?

Rich: Absolutely. This is something we have tried to do from the very beginning — trying to channel all of our energy and the energy from the audience into performances that ebb and flow like a psychedelic trip and build up a kind of hypnotic and cathartic intensity.

Christie: That is our ideal: coming together with an audience to be immersed in a shared sonic experience. It doesn’t always work that way but when we have a sense that an audience — or even part of an audience — is connected in that way it can be very transformative.

Rich: Ecstatic!

Rich:

There’s a certain coldness and distance in your sound, but at the same time it’s very intense. Is that something intentional, or does it just come out that way?

Rich: Like a lot of the artists that influenced us, we try to create music that reflects modern life and especially the more challenging aspects of life. I think you can hear that in the music: alienating and unsettling atmospheres alongside a more intense energy of discontent, rage, resistance.

Is that an intentional position for you?

Rich: Again, it’s something that has taken shape rather than being a calculated decision. For better or worse, we’ve always created the kind of music that felt right at the time and it has never fit neatly into genre divisions. Sometimes I think it would have been much easier for us if we had made some concessions here and there but ultimately we have made our own path and we have been fortunate enough to connect with a wide variety of people and music scenes along the way.

How important is it for you that listeners actually understand the meaning behind a track? Or is the feeling enough?

Christie: It isn’t necessary for a listener to understand the particular details or references. I like music and art that is open to multiple interpretations and it is good when you can bring something of yourself or where you are at a particular moment to a song or a work of art. That said, if a listener understands the intention behind a track or an album they might get more out of it. They might understand the choice of sounds, rhythms, structures and lyrics more fully and how particular tracks fit together to tell a story or express an idea.

Rich: I agree. The feeling is enough and I think each person can and should interpret art in whatever way they wish. A track or an album can hit you in very different ways at different points in time, based on your own experiences and interpretation. But the titles, samples and lyrics that we use always have specific references in them that are there for people to investigate if they want to dig deeper.

You’ve been working together for many years. Do you still run into moments where you completely disagree on a track? How do you deal with that?

Christie: In any collaboration, there is always a certain amount of compromise and we have definitely had moments of disagreement, where one person isn’t really feeling a particular track or direction. That track might sit for a while longer while we try different ways to rework it or it might take time to listen to it with fresh ears or a new perspective.

Rich: I would say that disagreements are pretty rare, though. We have a good sense of what does and does not fit into the broad boundaries of the project and I think we’re both open to stretching those boundaries. We also have a division of labour that tends to avoid conflict, insofar as Christie is largely responsible for sound design and I am largely responsible for editing and composition.

If you strip away genres and labels, what is Orphx to you today?

Christie: A place for us to explore new sounds and compositions and to work through our interpretations of current events and ideas, whether personal or social / political.

Rich: An expression of what it means to be a human in the present moment, with a particular emphasis on life’s challenges and fears.

Socials:

Since then he’s gone through Berlin, launched Perfect Tension, and had a track land in a Raf Simons show. We talk about why commerce never became his goal, why he got rid of almost all his gear, and what’s kept him in music for nearly thirty years.

You started making music back in 1997. What did the scene sound like then, and what from that era still shapes what you do today?

Without the internet, sound was the only way to connect with an artist. There was no visual layer accompanying almost every release like today. The connection to music felt much stronger. I still miss it, honestly. I remember when Discogs appeared, the first thing I did was go look at what Regis and Surgeon looked like. They turned out almost exactly as I’d imagined them. I’m still influenced by the idea of the scene as a community. I think in terms of people united by a shared culture and an exchange of energy. Back then, enthusiasm often mattered more than commercial goals. I think that’s stayed with me. The sound was, let’s say, bolder.

What drove you toward industrial and experimental techno rather than something more accessible? Was it a conscious choice or were you simply following the sound that pulled you in?

I was always drawn to the aggressive character of industrial sound and its hypnotic cyclicality. There’s a spirit of rebellion in it, from Punk and TOPY. I never thought in terms of audience comfort. There has always been a demand for complex, dark, and ambiguous art. Humanity has a very large shadow.

Tell us about the move to Berlin. What did it give you as an artist and is there anything you left behind?

In the ’90s, Berlin was almost a myth to me. Back then it was a different city, with cleaner energy and strong communities. I arrived already in a period of commercialization and partial loss of that culture. And the start of the war in Ukraine, the death of my friend Silent Servant, and the pandemic made additional adjustments. Did I gain anything from it? Definitely not. Did I become stronger? Yes.

Where did the alias Perfect Tension come from? How does that project differ from what you release under your own name?

Perfect Tension is a move toward post-punk combined with cyclical electronics. I liked the combination of words itself. Bold enough, and it describes the character of the sound well. The Alexey Volkov project was more about techno and stopped existing after the war in Ukraine began. For personal reasons.

How did your music end up at the Raf Simons show? Tell us that story.

Terence Fixmer told me about it. He was present at the show. Raf Simons has always had an interest in subcultures and early Belgian sound. Fixmer transformed and modernized that sound, and I ended up on his label Planete Rouge. So that connection feels quite natural.

How do you feel about electronic music becoming more and more intertwined with fashion and visual art?

Extremely positive. A huge number of talented people work in both music and fashion. To me it’s a natural dialogue between different art forms.

In my case, this makes the process more productive and more focused. I’ve used Ableton practically since it first existed. As for hardware, I’ve kept only the DSI Mopho, a step sequencer, and a bass guitar. Everything else I sold or gave away. Without these tools I wouldn’t be able to work. The rest is noise. Also, it’s much more interesting to climb into an abandoned industrial site with a recorder and record your own sounds than to sift through ready-made sample packs.

The music industry has changed enormously over the years you’ve been in it. What changes have you made peace with, and what still doesn’t sit right with you?

I never felt like part of the music industry. But the ways of publishing and promoting music have changed. Today you can become very visible thanks to the right infrastructure, distribution, publishing, and marketing, even without especially strong material. At the same time, the speed of processes itself has increased. I constantly watch big names appear and disappear. Especially among DJs. Though it’s more accurate now to say USB-jockeys.

Industrial and experimental techno were at their peak between 2014 and 2019, then hard techno took over the scene. Now it feels like interest in more complex and avant-garde sound is growing again. Do you notice that shift? How do you see these cycles, why does the scene swing like this?

Good question, but I don’t know. I don’t think about it.

Many say underground techno is gradually being commercialized and losing its edge. Do you agree? Where is the scene heading?

Commercialization is indeed happening. But the demand for purity of expression and a high level of abstraction isn’t going anywhere. It seems to me we’re moving toward an interesting split between AI and what used to be called the spark of God. Perhaps in the end a symbiosis will emerge. I’m not pessimistic. On Bandcamp and in underground communities, an enormous amount of very pure and authentic music still appears. So the genuine will for it exists in people.

Over nearly three decades in music there must have been moments when you wanted to walk away, what kept you going? And looking ahead: what are you working on now, and is there a goal or idea that still won’t let you go?

No, I never had the desire to give it all up. There have been ups and downs, but the process of making music itself has long been part of my identity. I keep doing it because I like the process itself. Without inflated expectations, but with the understanding that my sound sometimes gets under someone’s skin and stays there for a long time.

Socials:

Built on bass-driven structures and repetition, the sound feels minimal but carries a strong physical weight. There’s a sense of control in the studio, but live it often turns into something more intense and unpredictable. I spoke with Qual about writing, touring, and the way the project continues to evolve.

In general, I don’t see the point in burying sounds, they need to shine, so bombarding with multiple layers is most likely gonna porridge the track. My sounds, textural approach is specifically tailored to fit the track, I patch and program/process sounds to how I want them to be, and then let them breathe on their own.

Are there themes you consciously avoid in your lyrics?

Starting from the first punk rock concerts, electronic music underwent significant changes: the DIY approach opened up unlimited access for young musicians to experiment with synthesizer-based music (including in areas such as poster design, album artwork, and perspectives on religion, politics, etc.).

Formally, techno is considered to have originated in Detroit, but the music created there found strong demand in Germany. On the other hand, Belgian new beat (which originally combined slowed-down synthpop (AB sound), acid house, and EBM) became the “missing link” between futuristic Detroit and industrial Berlin.

Slow, dark music with hypnotic basslines and an EBM aesthetic perfectly resonated with European youth who were tired of the pop-oriented mainstream sound of the 1980s. It was precisely from Belgium that the atmosphere of the “dark dancefloor” spread to Germany, later transforming into hard German techno.

The fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989—triggered by mass protests, a political crisis, and a mistake by a GDR official who announced the immediate opening of the borders—granted access to newly liberated spaces in the western part of the city (abandoned warehouses, basements, bunkers). These spaces became venues for uncontrolled underground raves where it didn’t matter what your education was or what family you came from; dark electronic music drowned out conversations about politics, while the absence of light erased the visual distinctions between Berliners previously divided by the Wall.

Parallel to the development of electronic music in Germany, in the mid-1980s DJs in Valencia (Spain) were among the first to mix post-punk, industrial, and EBM (alongside new wave and new beat). Over time, and with the growth of the local music industry, the Valencian scene transformed these influences into its own genre called Bakalao (which later evolved into the faster and more commercial genre Makina), itself influenced by early German techno.

And while Berlin, after the fall of the Wall, was only beginning to establish itself as a techno capital, the Ruta del Bakalao (or Ruta Destroy—meaning “the route of destruction”) was already a fully formed industry, attracting tens of thousands of visitors to various techno clubs every weekend.

Link: https://soundcloud.com/dazeraw/takis-spectre-podcast-028-wav/

Daze.

Years of Denial are a duo that has steadily strengthened their presence on the industrial scene in recent years. Their music is built on sharp rhythms and minimal structures, but live it unfolds differently — denser and more intense. I spoke with Years of Denial about the stage, the studio process, touring, and how they see the project evolving from here.

How did the name “Years of Denial” come about? Has its meaning changed for you over time?

The name was created by Jerome in 2015 to commemorate the 100th year of denial of the Armenian Genocide. This subject resonates deeply with him, as he is half Armenian. The meaning of the name hasn’t changed for us, especially in light of the ongoing crimes that continue to this day. There can be a different interpretation of the name, which is quite intriguing. Living in denial is something we all understand and have likely experienced at some point in our lives.

Как появилось название Years of Denial?

What is the stage for you — a tool of impact or a space for experimentation?

Playing live on stage is one of the main reasons we do what we do. The shared physical experience creates a sense of unity, capturing the power of the present moment. It’s extremely cathartic. We are not just a studio project; our music needs to transcend and come to life. With Barkosina’s background in theatre and performance art, she effectively uses the stage as a powerful tool of impact, whether it’s encouraging women to take the lead or playing with social commentary. Jerome loves to experiment with sound effects, using dub mixology to manoeuvre the audience’s mind. We both try to push the boundaries to create something memorable.

Do you consciously build in that difference?

We like the idea of creating a record that you can listen to at home while also delivering a live show that transforms into a more dynamic and energetic experience. We want to offer an album that achieves both. Performing live is an art form in itself, involving stage presence, direct engagement with the audience, a sense of urgency, and the effective use of space, lighting, and sound. There’s a lot to consider and work with in this process, and we pay attention to it; it’s important for us.

How do you see the state of the industrial scene today — a solid movement or temporary attention?

It’s difficult to define what “industrial” means today. There are still some decent noise and EBM acts, but it seems the world is turning a blind eye to them. Looking back, it used to represent a solid, radical movement with influential acts like Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, Einstürzende Neubauten, Esplendor Geométrico, SPK, to name a few. However, the current scene today is increasingly nuanced and complex, evolving in new directions, giving rise to numerous subgenres. We are now witnessing a culture of “anyone can make it,” driven by desire for popularity, visibility, overexposure online, and an unhealthy obsession with self-image, rather than a genuine commitment to an artistic and political movement. What we often witness today is a quick fix, a hit of dopamine, music for fitness rather than music with depth or a manifesto.

People used to gain recognition because they had talent, skill, originality, or a significant impact. Today, recognition often comes simply from being visible. As a result, we see many individuals finding success on social media platforms, building their presence as brands within a commercial framework. Others remain dedicated to fostering strong, community-driven movements that prioritise the music itself over image or online metrics, and these are still thriving on healthy grounds, acts like Orphx, Puce Mary, Ancient Methods, Hypnoskull, Codex Empire, Pharmakon, or Dame Area, to name a few. They are not begging for attention; they simply deserve our attention for pushing the limits of the genre.

There was a significant imbalance between the time and energy we invested in our work and the financial and mental rewards we received. We felt exhausted and struggled to find the motivation to continue. It’s heartbreaking to give your best and still feel unable to sustain it. YOD is not a hobby; it’s a job. Any artist can relate to what we’re talking about. Current conditions for creative people are very tough. The rapid changes in musical styles and the constant demand for visibility make it even more difficult. We see ourselves as musicians, not content creators. The ecosystem of the industry is totally fucked right now. Many producers feel this way; everyone knows that DJs can demand ridiculous amounts of money for playing someone else’s music, while producers are barely getting by. However, we are grateful because this situation has opened our eyes. We want to move away from toxic environments and surround ourselves with spaces that are more welcoming and artistic, and luckily, that spirit is still alive.
